By Zou Bouchard MPM MSFM MAB Pet Nutrition Specialist/ Owner Abacoa - Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Whether your fur baby was adopted, gifted or bought --- everyone remembers the moment they first met their furry friend. The start of the year, we continue to meet new pet owners, pet owners who increased their pack and those who lost their pets and welcomed a new member in their family. We also increased our pack with 2 tiny Pomeranians, Kylie and Bear. They were owner surrendered and a concerted effort by customers to get them to us, or for us. They were a little over 1 year old and totally docile and happy pups. Their previous parent was good to them. Here’s our checklist: • Pet’s approval. Before we agreed to keep Kylie and Bear, we had to have a meet & greet with our dog Stella. She had to approve them. And approve them, she did! She played with them like she was a puppy all over again. She even let them get treats first before herself. • Nose to tail check. Since we are well -versed with dogs, we checked for clear eyes, clean ears, tartar build up and canine teeth count, bone structure, muscle tone, paw pads, nails, etc. Since this is a lifetime commitment, one should be ready to commit 100% for any additional care a pet may need now or in the future. • Since they will be going home with us, we needed them to be clean, buffed, polished and free of parasites. • We changed their diets to a high protein diet to keep their energy level up. To avoid an upset stomach, we added pumpkin puree in their food, and of course, pumpkin softies for their treats. • A change of environment can be stressful to our little ones. We gave them chewable multi-vitamins for their physical, mental and emotional stamina, and to bring out the beauty of their stunning skin and fur, cold compressed salmon oil from Norway added to their dog food. • Vet Visit. We scheduled them for a wellness check to make sure their internals were in mint condition and their vaccine up to date. This is a yearly regimen. • Doing their business outside or a designated spot is critical in any household. Tricks and following commands make the experience more fulfilling. It’s like winning a gold medal all the time. This checklist can be done in a different sequence depending on the family and how the pet was procured. So have fun with it!
