Abacoa & Alton Neighbors August 2020
A u g u s t 2 0 2 0 | Abacoa &Alton N E I G H B O R S 7 The movie Ghost, released thirty years this past July, brought romance to clay throwing with the steamy pottery wheel scene between Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. Chad Steve, who runs the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s ceramics program, brings creativity, inspiration, and expertise to his pottery classes. He also brought romance to the ArtCenter through his engagement to Director of Education, Maria Tritico. Steve got down on one knee and proposed at the end of a pier overlooking Jupiter Inlet this past January and Tritico said yes. The couple work together and are passionate about the arts. Tritico runs the school and teaches jewelry and metalsmithing. Steve teaches live-streamed and interactive handbuilding and wheel classes through Zoom. Students learn to create pots, bowls, cups, pitchers, and sculptures through demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, and hands- on experience from the comfort of home. Registration is now open for the next sessions. Tuition begins at $315 for a seven-week session. Proceeds are used to pay the not-for- profit’s instructors and to continue the organization’s mission of connecting community through a vibrant school of art, unique exhibitions, and diverse special events. For complete details visit lighthousearts.org . “Maria and I met three weeks before the end of grad school at the University of Hawaii. I saw this girl with an awesomely curly haired head and finally got up the nerve to talk to her. The rest is history,” smiles Steve. “The Lighthouse ArtCenter creates a sense of family and community. We share ideas, laugh and have fun! I really enjoy teaching. Each piece of pottery has a story to tell about the person who made it, what they are influenced by and value, and in many ways, who they are,” says Steve. Students are invited to post projects to social media and share their latest projects by tagging @lighthousearts and using the hashtags #LighthouseArtCenter #LACbettertogether on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
