Susan also worked at a salon in Lake Worth and that’s where she says that her “calling walked in the door.” There was a franchise named Mr. Tux on the corner of 10th Avenue and Congress. The two brothers that owned the shop were clients of the salon where Susan worked. “As soon as they got word of my sewing skills, they recruited me to help them with their prom season. I loved it!” Susan says. “I received such divine confirmation at such a tender age of an industry that I wanted a part of. They offered me a manager’s position at their newest location in Delray and I accepted.” As a manager, Susan was asked to seek out all the competitor’s prices, processes and policies in the area – and that’s when she met Peter and Maureen Swanberg, who owned The Tux Shop on Northlake Boulevard in 1986. “As I waited for them to finish with the customer in front of me, (I was posing as bride) I loved the feel of the store and how they were handling the customer. I never did ask about those 3 P’s! I simply asked if they were hiring.” It all made such an impression on her, she told herself, “Now that’s how a business is run!” And Susan has been there ever since. Susan has now personally fitted over 100,000 tuxes! As soon as the Swanbergs were contemplating retirement, she had an interest to buy the shop and now Susan is celebrating her 34th year with the Tux Shop Palm Beach! She is a living example of sales help turned owner, with hospitality as the central focus of providing excellent customer service. Susan believes that in retail, a servant’s heart is a must, “Goods don’t sell goods – people do.” “I wish others could have the confirmation that I had to continue on their path,” Susan says.
