22 Abacoa &Alton N E I G H B O R S | J a n u a r y 2 0 2 1 The Lighthouse ArtCenter (LAC) reopens its doors, welcoming visitors to experience a dynamic season of visual art in the freshly renovated and modernized Gallery & 2D Studio. On January 26, 2021, the 7,500-square-foot gallery kicks off the season with two concurrent exhibitions: Soul on Art: Ghosts of Africa and Radical Jewelry Makeover. Soul on Art: Ghosts of Africa (January 26-March 10, 2021) features a culturally diverse exhibition, with works by significant brown and black artists from all over the world. Radical Jewelry Makeover (January 26 - March 20, 2021) is an internationally traveling initiative, with donated jewelry that has been deconstructed and re-imagined into wearable pieces of art. The winter season ends with the highly anticipated 8th Annual Plein Air Festival (March 14 - 20, 2021), with twenty-four award-wining artists participating from all across the country. The ArtCenter is following CDC health and safety recommendations and is taking many precautions to ensure the safety of visitors, including increased cleaning, social distancing and a mask requirement. Although the members, students, faculty and staff may start out as strangers, the inclusive power of art ultimately unites us as a family,” states Curator, Janeen Mason. “We are very proud of this opportunity to invite new guests into our fold through the exciting exhibitions opening this January in our completely upgraded facility.” EXHIBITIONS: SOUL ON ART: GHOSTS OF AFRICA (January 26 - March 10, 2021) Soul on Art: Ghosts of Africa features work by significant brown and black artists, including Leonardo Drew, Adam Pendleton, William Kwamenah-Poh, Kara Walker, and Purvis Young. These accomplished painters, sculptors, and multimedia artists have created work held in prestigious collections including, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The exhibition presents thought-provoking and evocative artworks inspired by the artists’ personal experiences and cultural heritage. This is a must-see for anyone compelled to explore the effects of the African diaspora on some of today’s most successful contemporary artists. While some of the pieces are available for purchase, others are on loan from private collections.
