TooJay’s is a good example of an operator who created a one-stop selling experience where you can grab a meal and some paper towel and toilet paper. Larger chains like Panera Bread are joining the movement as well. Amid this Pandemic, something amazing began to happen. People rallied, businesses started stepping up; as restaurants and hotels closed, they donated their food to area food pantries and gave it away to their employees. Chefs began to deliver trays to hospitals and first responders. Subculture Group converted Howley’s Restaurant to feed 1200 laid off restaurant employees and hospitality workers a day in a drive-through line. Many local restaurants and hotels donated supplies, made cash donations and started non-profits to help local workers. These are the gestures and moments that are the hallmark of our restaurant industry. Our community will rebound and be stronger. My hope is, as you are reading this article, Social Distancing is over, and we are back to socializing and celebrating. We will need your support to revive our local restaurant community.
