M a y 2 0 2 0 | Abacoa &Alton N E I G H B O R S 7 COMMUNITY NEWS Now more than ever, our healthcare workers are giving of themselves and supporting this community in ways that are almost unimaginable. Here’s one nurse’s perspective: My name is Kristin Finley. I’ve been a Labor and Delivery nurse on night shift for 8 years at Jupiter Medical Center. I’m a mom of two sweet little girls, Adeline Grace - 6 and Piper Rose - 3. My husband Daniel is a great dad and very supportive partner. My kids know mommy goes to work to ‘help the mommies and babies.’ They love to know how many babies I helped come into the world when I get home in the morning. I’ve always said my job is either the best day ever or the worst day ever. When I say that I mean that while OB nursing is thankfully, usually a joyful time, often we also care for patients experiencing loss. In both cases, I do my best to support my patient and their loved ones, and advocate for their wishes as I would hope anyone would do for me. And now, with the concerns of COVID-19, and the increased anxiety of the staff and patients alike, even the most joyful happy shifts have uncertainty mixed in. The masks we now wear to try to keep everyone safe means my patients can’t always see my reassuring smile during an epidural placement. The support person now can’t as easily understand that everything is ok during pushing as my voice is slightly muffled and my nonverbal expressions disguised. The mask may be hot and uncomfortable, but I think I miss not being able to congratulate new grandparents or see siblings meet more than I expected. I love what I do, and so enjoy being a part of the birth story of my patients and their families. That picture looks different these days. We all understand it’s for the highest safety, but it diminishes the experience all the same. We are looking forward to getting through this time together so we can take off the masks and smile at one another more easily again. Until then, I hope every patient I have the privilege of caring for knows how much I’m trying to make their experience a good one, even if it isn’t how any of us pictured things to be.
