Whether he’s supporting his children’s schools, trying to keep up with his faster- running daughter, supporting the local arts, playing drums with neighbors, or building a company in Palm Beach Gardens, leadership means showing up for the people around him. That philosophy also shapes how he leads his own organization. Carter believes his job is to establish the vision, put capable people in positions of responsibility, and then trust them to take ownership. “My job is to set a clear direction, give people the support they need, and hold them accountable while giving them room to lead.” For someone who began his career by gathering people into a drum circle, there is a certain continuity to the life Carter has built here. The Columbia drum circle brought people together after a moment of enormous disruption. Best Practice Institute began by bringing leaders together to learn from one another. In Palm Beach Gardens, that same instinct has found more personal expressions—in schools, races, the arts, music, local businesses and organizations, and the relationships his family has built over the years. “Family comes first, and community is a big part of our lives,” Carter says. “I want to make time for the people who matter to me and contribute to the place we call home.” For Carter, Palm Beach County is where family, work, and community come together. Whether he’s behind a drum kit, supporting his children’s schools, or leading his company, the commitment is the same: show up and contribute.
