Wilmes MBA, CFP,®ChFC®CLU,®CASL, RICP® - Economic Update FOR NOVEMBER A s we enter the final quarter of 2026, the U.S. economy continues to demonstrate resilience, although growth has moderated. Real GDP grew at an annualized 1.5% rate in the second quarter, following 2.1% growth in the first quarter. While slower growth warrants attention, the data point more toward normalization than a broad economic contraction. Inflation remains a key consideration. The Federal Reserve’s preferred PCE inflation measure rose 3.7% over the year through July, while core PCE increased 3.3%, both above the Fed’s 2% long-term target. The Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50%–3.75% in July, reinforcing the importance of watching incoming inflation and employment data as policymakers determine their next steps. The labor market is also cooling gradually. August payrolls increased by 162,000, while unemployment remained at 4.1%. Hiring is no longer occurring at the extraordinary pace seen earlier in the recovery, but employment remains relatively healthy. A slower labor market does not necessarily mean a weak labor market. Consumers and businesses continue to provide important support. Consumer spending remains positive, while businesses continue investing in artificial intelligence, automation, digital infrastructure, and other technologies designed to improve productivity and efficiency. THE TAKEAWAY The U.S. economy appears to be entering a more balanced phase of expansion. Growth is slower, inflation remains elevated, and uncertainty persists, but the underlying economy remains resilient. For long-term investors, this environment reinforces the importance of perspective. Markets will continue to respond to economic data, Federal Reserve decisions, geopolitical events, and corporate earnings. Rather than attempting to predict every turn, investors may be better served by focusing on what they can control: diversification, risk management, tax efficiency, liquidity, and a disciplined financial plan.
