I will wear the product I stand by.” For Gundry, that commitment is directly connected to the company's reputation. “It's got to be comfortable and durable. I have to stand by my brand.” The philosophy is simple: if Mark wouldn't wear it himself, he doesn't expect his customers to. MORE THANAPPAREL For Gundry, however, Hole Life® is ultimately about considerably more than clothing. The company's growth has created opportunities to support causes and people both locally and internationally. The brand has worked with organizations in Palm Beach County, golf schools in Uganda and football organizations in Canada, while also participating in charitable initiatives. Gundry hopes that community involvement will become an even larger part of the company's future, particularly when it comes to young athletes. “We would like to impact the community by helping young athletes,” Gundry’s finance, Jeanette, said. “Once we're ready, we would like to sponsor athletes that don't have the means or just need that little extra push.” That desire to help others is becoming an important part of the company's vision— and of Gundry's leadership philosophy. “I think that leadership is only as good as the leader behind it. I think it needs to be led by integrity and honesty and trust.” TAKINGTHE HIGH ROAD Gundry also believes strongly in taking the high road, even when doing so requires patience. “You have to take the high road. That's the only road,” Mark explained. “It may take you longer by taking the high road, but you know what? I'll take that longer time because the payoff at the end of the day is more than I could ever imagine.” That philosophy carries into how he approaches the inevitable setbacks that come with building a business. “I've learned humility,” Gundry said. “I've been humbled by things where I thought it would be something a lot different. And it's more like trying to climb up a wall with nothing to climb up.” “But you've got to keep climbing. You've got to keep driving. And even when you get to the top of one, you're only at the bottom of the next one.” KEEP CLIMBING Perhaps most importantly, Gundry believes ideas only matter when someone is willing to act on them. And that may be the clearest lesson of Hole Life's journey. What began with a name, a prayer, and an idea in a little pink chair has grown through relationships, persistence, faith, and a willingness to keep moving forward. “Be proud to be who you are,” Gundry said. “Be okay to stand in front of that mirror and look right back at yourself and congratulate yourself for things that you didn't think you could do.” For Gundry, that is what building a business—and a life—is ultimately about: Believe in the idea. Stay true to the values behind it. And keep climbing. Because sometimes the biggest ideas don't arrive in a boardroom. Sometimes they begin in a little pink chair.
