My response was (I don’t mean to be a wise guy) that it could be worse, not train and develop them and they stay. Everyone wants to be heard, seen, and valued. We must remember to focus on what we put “into people vs. what we “get out “of them. Keiser University – Flagship Campus M ost leaders will agree, the most important asset we have is our people. In fact, a common phrase today is “Human Capital”. People growth is critical to the success of the organization. Allow me to share a mantra I have adopted “PEOPLE GROWTH = BUSINESS GROWTH, LACK OF PEOPLE GROWTH =BUSINESS IN DECAY”. WE are not accountable for their growth. However, I believe we are accountable to them. We should be providing resources for them to grow. Possible mentoring, certainly directing and empowering them to seek growth opportunities. One method that has proven effective for growing our people is regular one-to-one meetings. I am not referring to a performance review. Regular one-to-ones will uncover what is happening in their world. What obstacles are they incurring? What opportunities could they capture? When we engage in this type of development we are connecting in a meaningful and impactful way. As leaders, connecting with the team, and in particular, the high performers will help create a growth atmosphere. Please allow me to share my definition of “connecting”. Connecting is the ability to identify with people and relate to them in a way that increases your influence with them.” John Maxwell said, “You can impress people from a distance, but to impact them, you must be up close”. Communicating and connecting with our people is the foundation of our leadership. Being present, listening more, and focusing on them. Below is a checklist to assess your effectiveness in growing and connecting with your people: • Am I effective at clearly communicating expectations? • Do I provide open and honest feedback on performance? • Am I “investing” my time with my best? • Am I providing public and private recognition? • Am I removing obstacles or barriers in a way for growth? Do we have a process for accountability? Obviously, when our people are improving critical skills and acquiring more knowledge, we can expect increased performance. There is no guarantee for that, however, we can almost guarantee without growing, performance will not improve. Clearly developing people is a process and takes time and energy. Recently in a workshop I was conducting on the subject of developing our people, a participant was expressing her frustration. She pointed out they were having too much turnover and were investing resources Bob Fashano is the founder of Lead One Consulting, LLC, an executive Coaching and Leadership Development Company located in Palm Beach Gardens.
