I want to use this position to bring awareness to Palm Beach State, which is a staple in the community.” As with any good Honors College student, Michael did his homework, researching previous trustees and how to drive today’s students to a plethora of resources, something that has benefited him. “I want to give other students the same peace of mind I was fortunate to have. I am Lake Worth born and raised, and the College is dear to my heart. Palm Beach State is a cornerstone of Palm Beach County, a beacon of hope that can help secure a future.” Michael admires Palm Beach State President Ava L. Parker, J.D., for the mission she is leading to transform lives and strengthen the community. Looking toward President Parker’s example, he hopes to ensure success for fellow students and their families and to impact community through good works and strong relationships. Keeping community-mindedness at the top of his to-do list, Michael sees himself as a potential trailblazer, eventually starting a nonprofit for underrepresented students, his way of giving back. Thankful for the opportunities that have empowered him thus far, Michael is indebted to Palm Beach State. A first-generation-in-college student, he embraces his Christian values and is happiest with his community of family and friends. With a love for learning, he maintains a mindset to share what he knows based on experiences that have shaped his current success. That growth mindset is serving Michael well, driving him to serve others. Expressing empathy for those who may lack resources, he understands how advice, a listening ear, and the right people can make all the difference for one’s path in life. “Marcella [Montesinos], my advisor at the Honors College, sees in me what I don’t always see. That’s a gift, and she’s a key figure in my journey.” TRUST IN THE FUTURE Michael Derilus – By Dan Hauser | Photos by Neil Cohen Photography and Carol McDonald - Michael Derilus, PBSC's newly appointed student trustee
