For Jolita Midget and her daughter Jeanise Darius, graduating together from Palm Beach State College has allowed them to experience all three. Jolita and Jeanise endured several challenges during their time studying at Palm Beach State. Those trials, however, didn’t keep them from attending their commencement ceremony in May 2025. A student development representative and the first in her family to earn a degree, Jolita earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services, and Jeanise received an Associate of Arts degree. “This moment marks a prestigious and emotional celebration for our family, who immigrated to the United States from Haiti,” shared Jolita. “It brings me immense pride to hold our family’s head high. Even more special is seeing my daughter follow in my footsteps, continuing a new tradition of academic success and perseverance.” The greatest hardship during their time at Palm Beach State was seeing the struggles of Jolita’s mother, who had been in the hospital for over a month recovering from open heart surgery, including a triple bypass and two additional procedures. “Her journey has been physically painful for her and emotionally taxing for us,” recalled Jolita. At one point, Jolita and Jeanise even considered skipping graduation to stay by her side, but with encouragement and support from family, friends, and loved ones, they realized how important it was to be there. “Walking across that stage is not just for us—it is for her and for the dream our entire family has worked so hard to achieve,” said Jolita, who is a mother of three and balanced a full course load, internships, full-time work, and caregiving responsibilities. “It has not been easy, but I would not have it any other way. I truly believe this is my path and purpose.” Looking ahead, Jeanise is continuing her studies at Palm Beach State in pursuit of her bachelor’s degree, and Jolita soon begins a Master of Social Work at the University of West Florida. “We are committed to using our education and experiences to help others as much as we can.” That commitment to others is the cornerstone of a Palm Beach State College education, one that is seen from its students, faculty, and staff. And with 80% of graduates entering the Palm Beach County workforce, it’s a commitment that truly impacts the prosperity and well-being of our community.
