When Palm Beach State College (PBSC) was still Palm Beach Junior College (PBJC), George started a path that has made him the area’s premier Landscape Architect. When a football scholarship to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy fell through due to a knee injury, George turned to PBJC, earning an Associate of Arts degree in architecture, and fondly recalls his PBJC years. “It was a great experience in many ways. I would sneak into Watson B. Duncan’s class, which looked like a theater performance. PBJC offered an affordable education and set my career in motion, truly benefiting Jan and me.” During those years, George and Jan married, now celebrating 53 years. With three boys, they find joy with five grandchildren, spanning years from six to twenty-one, with two graduating from the University of Florida. One is in a pre-med program, with the other in landscape architecture, proudly influenced by her grandfather. After PBJC, George worked for a local engineering firm, and his father, who inspired him to continue his education. With a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, George became an Assistant Planning Director and then an Environmental Administrator for Indian River County. With George designing PGA National’s public spaces and buildings, he and a few fellow architects launched their own firm in Jupiter: GBS Architects, Landscape Architects, Planners. Six years later, George established his own company, George G. Gentile and Associates. Today, his firm, 2GHO (Gentile Holloway O’Mahoney), is comprised of landscape architects, planners, and environmental consultants, with George continuing to plan and design sustainable spaces for all to use and enjoy today. Leaving a legacy can take many meanings. To know George’s, stroll Jupiter’s Riverwalk, dine at the Waterway Café, or spend time at Abacoa, its common areas, community feel, and traditional neighborhood design born from George’s site planning and designs.
