People execute for you and deliver your products and or services to customers, clients, or patients. We need to stay connected to our best employees and top performers. That takes time. The reality is, we don’t have an infinite amount of time. Our time must be managed and prioritized for maximum results. Most of us would agree that people are our most important asset. If you agree, then investing time with your best can ensure better results. This topic I am sharing surfaced several months ago in a recent coaching session with a CEO I am working with. His response was what I typically receive when I challenge them to invest their time. He said, “I don’t believe that is the best use of my time. They are already performing at a top level. I don’t know what I can do to make them more productive. Many others need to improve their performance, and I need to focus on them”. I explained to him that I understand his position. However, I challenged him to think about HIS use of HIS time. Never leave people alone who need to be developed and equipped for better performance. We then identified several leaders on his team who could invest their time with a handful of potential leaders. We discussed a plan for him to conduct one-on-one session with his best people. Up to this point, he would have a coffee or lunch for an informal quarterly review. I don’t call that leadership. That is just “check the box”. The plan was for him to have a standing weekly or at least monthly one-on-one for 30 minutes. He would do little talking and more listening to what is happening in their world and what resources they might need to improve their performance. Just listening to your best is sometimes all that is needed. Regardless of stature, everyone wants to be seen, valued, and understood. I must tell you, he was reluctant at first. He wasn’t sure how they would react to more frequent meetings. We developed a narrative for him to set up these meetings. The narrative was centered on how the company could better support them. Incidentally, in the past, these people would always let leadership know if they needed something. I then asked him what would be more effective, being reactive or proactive? He agreed to give it a try, and we agreed on 3 months, and he would let me know. It was no surprise to me that in 2 months, he was surprised and pleased. He learned a great deal about his best performers. He listened, he valued them, and they responded. The bottom line is, Your People Grow the Business when they Grow. Our role as their leader is to help position them to shine, provide the resources, and remove any obstacles. Let’s remember theReal business we are in. THE PEOPLE BUSINESS.
