The evening news feels like performance art. Your industry's "best practices" keep producing worse outcomes. Meanwhile, some 22-year-old with a TikTok account is solving problems your entire field couldn't crack. You’re inside a paradigm shift. Here's how you know you're in one: the old fixes stop working, but nobody admits it. Experts double down on expertise that now sounds hollow. A perennial jeans ad whips up controversy everywhere, all at once, in real time, and the stock goes up. Same sexy jeans ad, but some are unhappy while others are making lots of money. The ground is shifting under every institution, every assumption, every carefully constructed career path. But nothing's collapsed yet. We're in that strange in-between space where the old rules still technically apply, but nobody's following them. And if you're feeling unmoored by all this? Good. That means you're paying attention. American culture has always sold us a simple story: work hard, make good choices, control your destiny. Personal responsibility is the ultimate answer. It's a seductive narrative because it puts you in the driver's seat. But neuroscience keeps proving something our culture resists: we're not driving solo. We're already embedded in networks of relationships, circumstances, opportunities—that shape every "individual" choice we make. The entrepreneurs and neuroscientists I work with admit this constantly. Oftentimes, they say, the turning point in client work is from granting permission to act on what the client already understood. We've been taught to think we need to network our way to success, when the truth is we are already fully networked. We just don't see it. When we dance alone, it’s not because we lack partners, but because we can't feel the music everyone else is moving to. We know the steps, but won't take them. The creative tension between what we can control (our choices, our responses) and what we can't (pretty much everything else), gives us pause. Instead of dancing through that tension, we freeze. A paradigm shift pushes most of us to learn new moves. Not because the old ones were wrong, but because the music changed. This uncomfortable space—the changes between what was and what's coming—is the most creative opportunity you'll see in your lifetime. It requires two things that feel contradictory, but aren't: 1. Clarity without comfort. See yourself and your situation without the filters of ideology or wishful thinking. That job that's slowly killing you? That relationship that stopped working months ago? The institution you keep defending, even though it's failed you repeatedly? Name it. 2. Connection without control. Recognize that your fierce independence exists within webs of interdependence you didn't choose and can't escape. Your success isn't entirely yours. But neither is your failure. In paradigm shifts, there's no playbook because the game itself is being rewritten. Your willingness to sustain both personal responsibility and social accountability—to own your choices, while acknowledging forces beyond your control? That is the new leadership. It’s all you. You act locally while thinking globally. You change what you can while accepting what you can't. You dance again despite the uncertainty, instead of demanding that everything stop moving. The thing that feels most out of control—this massive, disorienting shift—is actually you, realizing you are still in transformation. Maybe the thing that feels most out of control—this massive, disorienting shift—is actually you realizing there is more to do. That's how paradigms work. The dance master awaits. The music has changed. The student hears one command: Let’s see your moves. What are your thoughts? Have a question? I respond to every email. therobertbailey@gmail.com Welcome To The Dance - Submitted by Robert Bailey -
