COMMUNITY CORNER 12 P A L M B E A C H N O R T H SPORTS | M a r c h 2 0 2 3 • What do my parents, teammates, and coaches think of me and my results? • Did I win or lose with grace? Before they have a chance to process the experience completely, they must participate in a car ride that has the power to uplift and support their spirit or cause them to slump their shoulders. As parents, sometimes it’s not what we say, it’s what we don’t say. Sometimes it’s our tone or their interpretation of our tone. It could be the look on our faces or their interpretation of our look. It can be words because words hold a great deal of power. Often it can be the rigid, frustratable energy that permeates from the car. Here’s an important tip. This is not the time to criticize them about what went wrong and all the shoulda, woulda, and couldas. It’s not the time to sweat about the referee calls or the coach’s decisions, what could be improved, or opportunities missed. Save that for the teachable moment ---that perfect intersection between everyone feeling calm, connected, and receptive later that day. The car ride home is meant to feel good. Because even if the whole world came crashing down around them during the game, even if everything went “wrong”, there are people in that car who love and admire them and that is a profound, beautiful, and priceless gift we can give to our kids. Look, parenting isn’t easy. We all mess up sometimes, we’re all human. Still, I hope this article from Coach Huber can give you a tool for interacting with your kids. Please share this with anyone that could benefit from it. I want to ensure kids don’t have a negative car ride experience. Jim is a basketball coach, mentor, and motivational speaker. He focuses on developing character and mindset through youth athletics. “Here’s something that puts an ache in my heart.” 35% of kids who play youth sports quit after the first year of competition. 85% of the children who continue to play drop out of organized sports completely between ages 10 and 17. Finding out WHY this happens is important. As coaches and parents, we know there are big emotions all ‘round when it comes to game time. When asked what young players feel is ONE of the worst parts of sports, across towns, cities, states, and even countries the answer is usually the same..."THE CAR RIDE HOME." Feelings are nuanced and complex, and kids are navigating through the heightened emotions of the game. They are sensitive, raw, and full of adrenaline. Their higher-thinking brain will struggle to interpret things around them with calm and clarity. They may unconsciously be thinking… • Did I live up to my own high standards and plat my best? • Did the pressure get to me? • Did I play as strong as my teammates? • Did I miss that opportunity?
