N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 1 | P A L M B E A C H N O R T H SPORTS 15 COMMUNITY CORNER Do you need to be pushy and a” talker” to sell successfully? Many think so. However, I believe there is a better way. A way that even introverts can sell without resorting to stereotypical sales behavior. It starts with attitude. Think of your favorite server in a restaurant, one who is friendly and delights in providing excellent service. You may not think of the server as a salesperson but if they are offering specials, drinks, appetizers, desserts, and periodically asking how you are doing, they are indeed selling. Which type of server do you enjoy the most? Someone who is kind, caring, trustworthy with their recommendations? Or do you want a person to just take your order, drop your food down and then show up with the check? That question is easy, right? Now, as a servant-minded person, what can help us to become better in the craft of selling? First, keep the servant- minded attitude. That is one of your core values and is a strength, not a weakness. Zig Ziglar said "You can get everything you want in life if you will just help other people get what they want.” What does this saying mean for those of us who sell? Simply serve others and the way you treat them will be returned to us. Instead of looking out for our own commission interests, serve and the results will follow. Does it work? Without a doubt, it works! Back to the server in the fine restaurant. They obviously benefit when we get the more expensive items. Yet when we order water instead of a glass of wine or pass on the dessert, they keep smiling and serving, treating us like royalty, without concern for their “commission”. They are providing a service and a product and are making sure we are pleased with everything. That is selling with dignity, just in a condensed format. Selling is helping. Selling is serving. Selling is showing love for others. It is honorable and dignified. Showing others you truly care is all you need to do to separate yourself from the ones who care only about themselves. It really is pretty easy to do when you look at it this way. People want to do business with people like you. They just don’t know you yet or understand that you are servant- minded yet. How will they find out about you? They will not magically appear. We need to go find them. Where are our potential clients? Are they at work? Are they involved in a charity? Are they in our places of worship? Are they at our children’s soccer game? Are they at network or Chamber events? No matter where they are if we are friendly and servant-minded, we can look for people who we can serve. Serve first. The selling will follow.
