It was the little things she did that marked her out.” That generosity is remembered warmly by Palm Beach State alum Channell Swaby, who met Jan through an art class and still keeps her and her kindness close to her heart. “Jan was monumental in my life, a mentor and second mother during a difficult time for me and my daughter. She became a great friend, always about being healthy, and she gave me great advice for the business side of the art world.” Channell certainly benefited from Jan’s guidance as well as her own artistic prowess, having her artwork exhibited locally and internationally at galleries and museums, including the Louvre in Paris. Crediting Palm Beach State as a valuable support system, Channell appreciates that the College is home to Jan’s scholarship, helping students just as Jan did for her and others. For James Goodwin, it’s a fitting tribute to Jan and how she has touched people’s lives. “How we influence people and events in this life on earth is a gift each of us can give, and Jan did this with inner and outer beauty, grace, and elegance.” Now on permanent display at the College, Elegance is not only a sculpture dedicated to Jan but also an inspiration for youth, vitality, and the creativity of aspiring artists. Her legacy is as vibrant as Jan herself, reminding us that through a life of adversity, her beauty and love shone undiminished. ANDRIAM.
