Some simply show up every day, do the work, and let the results speak for themselves. Dr. Jeffrey N. Weiss, M.D., is that kind of physician. A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Weiss showed an early love for science and learning, earning his way into college at 16 and medical school at 19 on full scholarships. While completing his medical degree, he simultaneously earned a degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating Magna Cum Laude with distinction, before receiving his medical degree Summa Cum Laude at just 23 years old. From the very beginning, his drive was never about recognition. It was about learning as much as he possibly could so he could give more to his patients. A CAREER BUILT ON EXCELLENCE That commitment to his patients has defined every chapter of his career. He went on to serve as Chief of Retinal Surgery at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Faculty of Harvard Medical School, and as a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over the course of his career, he has authored more than 100 publications, including 28 books, holds over 22 United States and foreign patents, and has lectured and performed surgery nationally and internationally. He is also the founder of two companies, Ocular Research Associates Inc. and Micron Ophthalmic Inc., which have brought his inventions to patients around the world. His clinical contributions have quietly changed lives in ways that many patients never fully realize. Dr. Weiss was the first to develop the technique to safely perform retinal vessel cannulation, a surgery that remains the only option for patients suffering from severe stroke in the eye. He was also the first to report the successful use of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration and long-standing central retinal artery occlusions. Each breakthrough came not from a desire for recognition but from a simple refusal to accept that nothing more could be done for a patient in need. A HISTORIC FIRST In 2010, Dr. Weiss performed the first retinal stem cell surgery in the world, using a patient's own stem cells to restore vision in patients who had been legally blind. He is the Principal Investigator of the Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Studies I and II, the largest retinal and optic nerve stem cell studies in the world, alongside several other IRB-approved studies registered with the NIH and listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. His work has extended internationally as well. Since obtaining a Dubai medical license in 2015, he has traveled regularly to examine patients, perform surgery, and lecture across the UAE, where he was a finalist for the UAE Healthcare Award in 2018 and 2019 and was asked to write the Regenerative Medicine Regulations for Dubai in 2018. He is currently working on a research project focused on detecting early Alzheimer's disease markers non-invasively, without needles or invasive procedures and at a fraction of the time and cost of existing testing methods. A peer-reviewed study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease in July 2026 showing encouraging early results. The project remains in active research and development and is not yet FDA-approved, but the early findings have been meaningful, and the work continues with the same quiet determination that has always driven him. A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO MEDICINE AND PATIENTS Dr. Jeffrey N. Weiss, M.D.
