He sees each location as an opportunity to create something that could not be created in Nashville alone, a philosophy shaped in part by his early career at Stanford, where he witnessed the relationship between the university and Silicon Valley as the internet economy was emerging. “We believe that the great university of the future will be deeply integrated with its community and especially the innovation ecosystem,” Diermeier said. West Palm Beach, he noted, fits that philosophy particularly well. As he put it, the region brings together technology, finance, and other high-growth industries, creating an environment in which Vanderbilt can pursue areas that complement, rather than duplicate, what it can do in Nashville. “West Palm Beach is an emerging area. South Florida has very exciting, high-growth industries - technology, defense, finance— So it offers a distinct environment with strengths that complement those of our home campus in Nashville.” In fact, Vanderbilt’s own materials describe South Florida as a rapidly growing innovation and financial hub. The university envisions the West Palm Beach campus serving approximately 1,000 graduate students annually, while also providing executive education, workforce development, lifelong learning, and opportunities for Vanderbilt undergraduates to engage with the region. Diermeier sees the relationship going even further, well beyond just academics. Research universities, he argues, can become anchors for innovation economies by attracting talent, generating ideas, and creating mutually beneficial partnerships among universities, businesses and communities. “Research universities are the beating heart of the innovation economy,” he said. So far, Diermeier noted, the university has received unwavering support from the city, county, and, just as importantly, local philanthropists. “West Palm Beach’s mayor has been fantastic. The county mayor has been fantastic. The local business community has been fantastic. Everybody has been extremely supportive.” While the March land gift from the Greenes further accelerated the project, Vanderbilt has said it plans to deepen community engagement even further and begin activities before the entire project is completed. The expansion also reflects Diermeier’s broader approach to leadership: knowing what belongs inside the mission—and what does not. “The temptation to be pulled from one fad to another is very high,” he said. “People will immediately ask, ‘They’re doing this, why aren't you doing that?’ Or, ‘You went to XYZ City, why aren't you coming to my city?’” His answer is rooted in the same clarity of purpose that has guided Vanderbilt’s broader transformation. “You have to evaluate these things as opportunities in relationship to who you are. Don't deviate from that.” That same clarity is evident in how Diermeier defines leadership. “Number one, you've got to be clear about the purpose of the entity that you're leading, the enterprise that you're leading, the values that support it and the operating principles that make it work.” Then comes direction, execution, and people. “Number two is you need to set the strategic direction,” Diermeier added. “The world around us is changing, and you need to have a point of view on where you want to play, where you don't want to play, and how you want to play. And that cannot be delegated. That's the job of the CEO, or in my case, the chancellor.” “Three, you've got to be able to get things done. Getting things done is a lot about people—having the right people, attracting the right people, and developing the right people, culture, and processes.” That combination of clarity and action has produced a university increasingly willing to think beyond traditional boundaries. For West Palm Beach, it offers a new research and education anchor at a moment of rapid regional growth. And Diermeier is clear about the kind of relationship he wants Vanderbilt to build with its newest community. “We want to be a great partner for the community.” For Vanderbilt, the test will be whether its presence in West Palm Beach creates something the university could not have built alone. And if its current record is any indication, then all signs point to success.  MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN OCTOBER 22-24, 2026 RINKER PLAYHOUSE THE NUTCRACKER DECEMBER 4-6, 2026 DREYFOOS HALL ANNE FRANK MARCH 5-7, 2027 RINKER PLAYHOUSE CINDERELLA APRIL 9-11, 2027 RINKER PLAYHOUSE A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM JUNE 26, 2027 DREYFOOS HALL SEASON SPONSORED BY ANKA PALITZ FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TICKETS VISIT BALLETPALMBEACH.ORG BALLET PALM BEACH 2026/2027 SEASON Ballet Palm Beach - Abacoa Alton 2026.indd 1 9/9/26 3:53PM
