I joined the ROTC while in college, and upon graduation, was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. I served for six years in the 77th Infantry Division and was honorably discharged as a captain. After serving as Vice President for an advertising agency, I joined a pioneering hospital management company, led it through challenges, and later founded UHS, which I grew over time to become one of the largest and most respected healthcare service providers in the nation. Q: Tell us about the Mission you penned upon founding the company in 1979 A: The UHS Mission is to provide superior quality healthcare services that patients recommend to family and friends; physicians prefer for their patients; purchasers select for their clients; employers are proud of; and investors seek for long-term returns. We deliver benefit to every one of our stakeholders – with the patient as our top priority, always. Q: What does working in the healthcare industry mean to you? A: In healthcare, we help people. I believe there is no higher calling. I have tremendous respect for doctors, nurses, and staff, making a difference every day. In our hospitals, I want patients treated with the care I would want for my family. Q: What were your proudest moments as Founder and CEO? A: There have been many highlights over the years, such as acquiring and building new hospitals and expanding services, all of which enable more care for more people. It has been particularly gratifying to me to receive letters, cards, and emails directly from patients and their family members sharing positive experiences. Q: Tell us about your ties to the area. A: My wife Jill and I are long-time residents of Palm Beach County. Over the years, we have watched it grow and develop. We love this community, are proud to call it home, and have great friends here. Q: What are your aspirations for the hospital? A: Under the very competent leadership of hospital CEO Gina Melby and the team she has assembled, I am confident the hospital will have a very positive impact on the community, with a strong reputation as provider, employer, and partner of choice. We know consumers have choices, and we want the new hospital to be a destination for care that people select. My hope is that it will soon be known for saving and improving thousands of lives and being an essential asset to our community. The 2nd floor nursing team with Alan B.
