I’ll know what you’re doing because the scoreboard never lies.’ I’ve said that myself over a thousand times.” Another lesson that had a profound impact on Sellers came from Shula, who emphasized two qualities he valued above all others: ability and loyalty. “Coach Shula would say that the two qualities he looked for, whether it be a player or anyone else that came to work with him, were ability and loyalty,” Sellers said. “And he said, ‘I'll take loyalty over ability any day.” Those two principles stuck with Ron not just in his playing days, but have continued to shape the way he has gone about his second act, creating and running Sellers Benefits Group, where he has spent decades helping businesses and individuals navigate insurance and retirement planning, building a company that today serves clients throughout Florida and nationally. “If you play for the team, then we're going to win,” Sellers says. “If you play only for yourself and your advantages, then we're going to have a problem.” While Sellers had a successful career in itself on the gridiron, his transition to the business world actually began early on in his NFL career. After his rookie season with the Patriots, sports agent Bob Wolf introduced him to a Boston brokerage firm that was interested in interviewing several of his clients. As luck would have it, two of the men who interviewed Sellers ultimately became lifelong friends. “They became lifetime friends,” Ron said. “And I played probably 100 rounds of golf with them in New England, or sometimes they visit me down in Florida. But just great people.” That story is emblematic of the way Sellers views his life. While football has opened countless doors, relationships have allowed those connections to endure. That appreciation extends beyond business and football. Sellers remains an avid Florida State supporter, enjoys golf and travel, and continues to be actively involved in business. More than anything, he says, he still enjoys what he does. “I love what I do. I have a passion for what I do and helping people.” Perhaps the most important lesson Sellers carries from football, however, is the understanding that adversity is inevitable. Life, like a football season, rarely follows a straight line. “You just have to have a positive attitude, and that's what I've always tried to do,” Ron explained. I always have a really positive attitude. Whatever it is, I can get through it and keep moving forward.” That mindset has guided Sellers through professional transitions, injuries, challenges, and the uncertainty that accompanies any long career. While he learned many of these valuable lessons from the likes of Gibbs, Landry, and Shula, he also learned them through his own experiences— whether setting records at Florida State, playing for three NFL franchises, winning a Super Bowl, or building a business after his playing career ended. For a player who once measured success in catches, yards, and touchdowns, the scoreboard looks considerably different today. It is reflected in the people he has influenced, the relationships he has maintained, and the passion he continues to bring to his work. And, after more than five decades in business, Sellers remains driven by the same principles that served him on the football field: work hard, prepare, be loyal, play for the team—and keep moving forward.
